A colleague and I at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School led a small team of design students in creating the premiere issue of PUSH magazine, the Multimedia Photography & Design department’s iPad publication. Starting from pixel one and over the course of about 13 weeks, we developed the overall concept of PUSH and designed its first issue from the ground up. The impressive documentary content of the magazine was created by undergraduate and graduate students under the guidance of Newhouse faculty and industry professionals during MPD’s Fall Workshop 2012.

As if working with committed and talented people telling stories that matter weren’t enough, we ¬†also were very honored to receive three national awards for our efforts.

PUSH won first place for Best Design and third place for Technological Innovation in the Individual/Class category in AEJMC Best of the Web 2013 contest. (AEJMC is a nonprofit, educational association of journalism and mass communication educators, students and media professionals.)

We also won third place in the Tablet/Mobile Delivery Product category from the National Press Photographer Association’s Best of Photojournalism 2013, a professional contest with the likes of the Los Angeles Times, MediaStorm and the Washington Post winning other categories.

Yay team!

Here’s a sampling of that work …
